Kolaches   (Mrs. Vrana)

 

1 ½ c. warm milk           1 pkg. (2 ½ t.) dry yeast

2/3 c. sugar                   1 ½ t. salt

½ c. Crisco (vegetable shortening)

1 c. lukewarm mashed potatoes (instant is OK.)

2 eggs                          7 c. flour

 

Mix all ingredients except flour and 1 cup of the flour.  Let sit a couple of minutes to dissolve yeast.  Add remaining flour and mix with dough hook.  Knead.  Cover at let rise.  Shape.  Let rise.  Add filling.  Rest bake. 

 

 

May use dry milk.  (1/2 c. dry milk + 1 ½ c. water)

May use flake potatoes:

(1 c. hot water, add flakes to make soft potatoes.)

 

Filling Options:

 

-> Apricot (made with dried apricots, water & sugar -cooked)

-> Prune/raisin/lemon (see Hammentaschen)

-> Blueberry (frozen blueberries, sugar, cornstarch - cooked)

-> Cherry (canned cherries, sugar, almond flavoring, cornstarch - cooked).

-> Small wieners

-> cheese chunks

-> Ham & Cheese

-> Sausage
