Christmas Stockings or Bonbons

(1963 Betty Crocker Cooky Book)

1 c. butter         ½ c. powdered sugar (sifted)

1 t. vanilla          ½ t. almond flavoring

¼ t. food coloring (optional)

2 ¼ c. flour        ½ t. salt

Nut pieces         Chocolate Chips

Candied Cherries, cut in quarters.

The nuts, chips and cherry quarters will be used for the filling.  Mix dough. If too soft to handle, chill.  (I usually don't.)  For stockings make logs and flatten with hands.  Fill with 2 chocolate chips, 2 nut pieces and ¼ candied cherry.  Roll into log and turn one end for toe.  Bake at 400 for 10-12 min.  When cool, ice tops and toes with almond cookie glaze, to look like stockings.

Variation:  Make round cookies filled with items of your choice.  (From above list, could also choose other types of dried fruits.)  Place on cookie sheet and very slightly flatten with hand. Bake as above. When cool, ice tops with almond cookie glaze and sprinkle decorator toppings if desired.
